Golant Concert with soloist Maggie Holden
Loveny Male Voice Choir was welcomed to the idyllic ancient Golant Parish Church of St Sampsons on Saturday 16th May, by an enthusiastic audience. The concert proceeds were to support Fowey Lions local charities; and were part of the Fowey Festival.
The MC for the evening was John Ead and as usual did a fantastic job compering the concert, with his natural ability to connect with the audience and his great sense of humour kept the audience informed and entertained throughout.
Maggie Holden an old friend of the choir and a gifted soprano sang four pieces in all, she started by singing a song of nature the lovely Linden Lea the words from the poem by William Barns, set to music by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Come to the Fair a traditional folk song, lyric’s by Helen Taylor, music by Easthope Martin. Can’t Help Lovin Dat Man by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein, and finished with Cavatina (he’s so beautiful) from The Deer Hunter by Stanley Myers and Paul Potts.
Loveny’s MD Richard Braebrook produced a varied and entertaining programme of music. Assisted on the piano by their accompanist Sarah Scott they started the concert by singing the uplifting With a Voice of Singing and among others The Roll of the Sea which was arranged by their President and previous MD. Richard got the audience involved by inviting them to sing along to Edelweiss and Climb Every Mountain from The Sound of Music. Loveny went on to sing songs from Les Miserables the solo parts were sung by Maggie Holden and the choir’s principle tenor Colin Arthur. Loveny finished their selection by singing the dynamic Alexander’s Ragtime Band one of the songs they sang in the International Male Voice Choral Festival competition in which they won the cup for the best Cornish Choir in the forty singers and under category.
The concert finished by the choir inviting members from the audience to sing with them the great hymn Morte Christe.
The general consensus from the audience after the concert was very positive and judging by the applause throughout it was enjoyed by One and All.
Loveny’s next concert will be on Saturday 30th May at 730pm at St Cleer Church, soloist is Peter Bawden.
